How it works
Choose whether your amount is before tax (GST is added) or already includes GST (it is taken out). Within a state the tax is split equally into CGST and SGST; for supplies between states it is charged as IGST.
Since 22 September 2025 (GST 2.0), most goods and services are taxed at 5% or 18%, with 40% on luxury and sin goods. The 12% and 28% slabs have gone; 3% (gold and silver) and 0.25% (rough diamonds) remain.
Formula
GST = Net × rate Net = Inclusive amount ÷ (1 + rate)
- rate — the GST rate as a fraction (18% = 0.18)
Questions
What are the GST rates now?
Nil, 5%, 18% and 40% are the main rates since 22 September 2025. Most items that were at 12% moved to 5%, most at 28% moved to 18%, and luxury and sin goods moved to 40%. Check the rate for your specific goods or services before invoicing.
How do I take GST out of an inclusive price?
Divide the price by 1 plus the rate. For an ₹1,180 price at 18%: 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 net, so the GST is ₹180.
When is IGST charged instead of CGST and SGST?
IGST applies when the supplier and the place of supply are in different states (and on imports). Within one state, the same total is charged as CGST and SGST in equal halves.
