How it works
You can deposit ₹500 to ₹1.5 lakh a year in a PPF account for 15 years, and extend it in blocks of five years. Interest is compounded yearly; the calculator assumes each year's deposit is made at the start of the year (by 5 April for that month's interest).
The government sets the PPF rate every quarter; it is 7.1% for October–December 2026. Deposits qualify for the 80C deduction in the old regime, and the interest and maturity amount are tax-free.
Formula
Maturity = P × ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) ÷ r × (1 + r)
- P — yearly deposit
- r — yearly rate (7.1% = 0.071)
- n — years
Questions
What is the PPF interest rate?
7.1% a year for October–December 2026, unchanged for ten quarters. The rate can change every quarter.
Can I withdraw before 15 years?
Partial withdrawals are allowed from the seventh financial year, and loans from the third. Premature closure is allowed after five years for specific reasons such as treatment or higher education, at a lower rate.
Is PPF tax-free?
Yes — it is exempt at all three stages: deposits are deductible (old regime), and interest and maturity are tax-free.
